Karnataka: The emerging wine region
Ambrosia, August 2012
It may surprise many people that Karnataka is fast emerging as a wine-producing (and consuming) state: in 2011-12 the total consumption of wine in the state was some 3, 80,000 (9-bottle cases), nearly 20% of the total wine consumed in the country!
The major stimulus for this was the "Karnataka Grape Processing & wine Policy", notified in October 2008 by the state government. This liberalized the issue of licenses for producing wine, besides permitting new licenses for "Wine Taverns" (restaurants) and " Wine Boutiques" (retail) and today there are 21 units registered for producing wine in Karnataka (up from just three in October 2008), apart from 189 Wine Taverns and 14 Boutiques (of which 160 and eight respectively are in Bangalore city alone).

In Karnataka the oldest and best-known winery is Grover Vineyards, located 40km or 1 hour North West of Bangalore, outside the township of Doddaballapur.

The area near Doddaballapur seems to be emerging as a hub for new wineries. More wineries will doubtless be set up in Karnataka in the years to come, and one only hopes that the market grows fast enough to accommodate them all, for producing and marketing wine is one of the most fascinating businesses-surely something for the romantics in all of us.

Versatile Vodka
Ambrosia, August 2012
Vodka, once reviled as a drink fit only for old boring Russian oligarchs, is experiencing a renaissance of sorts.
Vodka – considered the most popular beginners in India, is growing at the rate of more than 20% a year. With slew categories of spirit brands entering the market, this colourless spirit has emerged as a winner.

Vodka is considered one of the purest forms of alcohol and is valued because it acts as a catalyst when combined with other ingredients. Traditionally vodka has been bland and tasteless but availability of flavoured and dual flavoured vodkas in green apple, vanilla and even chocolate has added a new charm to this drink. If flavor is one factor, versatility is another.

Vodka is long considered as a bartender's favourite drink. Bartenders uses it as a blank canvas to express their own individual taste as the spirit tastes good regardless what mixes you blend it and can be used as a base in a variety of cocktails. This odourless, colourless, white spirit teams up well with anything. It takes the flavor of everything and anything that the mixologist decides to mix it.
