Sales of imported spirits in India are predicted to reach 5m cases per year by 2015, according to a new study. | |
India's imported spirits market, including duty-free travel trade, is currently estimated to be around 28m litres and 3.1m cases,
while growing at an annual rate of 25%, according to the " India's emerging imported spirits market" study, published by The
Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). On this basis, the report predicts sales will break
through the 5m cases barrier, around 55m litres, by 2015. India's overall alcohol consumption is growing at about 30% annually and is likely to reach about 20bn litres in the next three years, according to ASSOCHAM. Wine consumption is expected to reach around 14.7m litres by the end of this year, representing 35% growth over the past four years, the trade body said. Meanwhile, the vodka market in India is growing at around 25% annually and is likely to reach about 10.2m cases by the end of this year, as it emerges as a "starting drink of choice" for young people, ASSOCHAM stated. Russia, India and China where drinking whisky has become a status symbol among the growing middle classes.
These affluent young professionals are developing a taste for scotch and quickly moving up to the more expensive single malt
and luxury blends, driving Scotch industry sales up 14% in the last six months of 2011.
Their emerging market business grew net sales 18% and operating profit 23% and now accounts for almost 40% of their
business. Their performance improved in their developed markets business and they delivered top line growth and operating

Liquor is the favorite attraction for passengers shopping at duty-free outlets at Indian airports. Liquor sales at Indian airports are
almost four times the global average in terms of percentage share. A retail report by an aviation analysis and research body states
that wines and spirits comprise 63% of the total international duty-free sales at Indian airports.
This is in sharp contrast to the international trend where alcohol comprises only 17% of the total duty free sales.
The main retail attraction for Indian fliers remains duty free liquor. The revenue from retail is now pitched to grow by 20-25%
